...in Japan, some of the NASA classes were forced to allow
additional tire brands due to production limitations at the Toyo
plant in Sendai, Japan. Toyo Tires remains supportive to the NASA racer
and will reward contingency based on the highest finishing driver on the
Toyo brand. This means that if a racer finishes 3rd in a race but is
the top finisher using a Toyo, that driver will qualify for the 1st

Toyo Tires reports that production is back up to about 70% of the level

of operations in stages while responding flexibly to supply and
logistical issues, so that by May, operations may resume at full

year, the NASA Championships at Miller MotorSports Park in Utah. It was a
great chance for the competitors to test any last minute changes to
their cars and ensure their car is solid and ready to go to the National
Championship event next month.
The Honda Challenge class was something to behold. Spectators would be
treated to close racing and hard battles all throughout the weekend. In
the end, H2 was dominated by Edik Stepanyan, 2nd went to Steph
Papadakis, and 3rd Awarded to Greg Neuwirth in the AEM Integra. The H4
battle was even closer with the top 3 cars battling it out for the
entire race. In the end, Angel Velasquez would take the win right in
front of Miguel Escobar followed by Gus Heredia making up the top 3
spots.
Sunday had a qualifying race resulting in the top 5 H2 cars each
qualifying within a few 100ths of a second from each other! The podium
would end the same as Saturday in H2 with Stepanyan and Papadakis having
a fantastic battle all throughout the race and Neuwirth and Manny coats
fighting over the last podium spot which in the end, Neuwirth was able
to grab. While in H4, Escobar was able to take the win with Heredia and
Velasquez hot on his tale in an exciting battle.
A fantastic season so far and the Nationals look to be one of the best
to date with a huge cash purse and lots of new sponsors supporting NASA.
Be sure to stay tuned for the next report and all of the Honda

brings them to a 150* right hander dubbed 'devil's elbow.' The exit of
that corner brings the drivers back on the super speedway (still
clockwise) through the tunnel turn, down the back straight and into the
brake zone for another right hander that brings drivers into another
infield section. A bumpy right hander with a crest in the middle, a left
hander and another right onto the front straight of the super speedway
completes a lap.
The practice session went smoothly for all the Honda Challenge drivers.
Mike Fries was back to keep the H1 class alive with his S2000. Erik
Olsen. John Baker, Stephanie Holifield, and Brian Casella would fill out
the H2 field for the day.
Qualifying time came and the order was Olsen, Casella, Baker, Holifield.
Baker had an off course excursion and bent up his new splitter and had a
caliper bolt back out. A quick trip to Phil's Tire Service got his
wheel re-balanced. He was able to find a new caliper bolt and no other
damage was done. He removed what was left of his mangled splitter and
took off his rear wing to even out the aero balance and he would be
ready for the race.
The start of the race would be interesting as the front straight is
about 7 cars wide and T1 funnels into about 3 car wide. The green flag
drops and everyone gets a clean start. A tube chassis SU pick-up spun in
T1 and cars scattered all over to miss it. No one was collected but
Baker lost some distance on Casella. Olsen chased Fries in his H1 car
for a few laps and got by him for a lap. But once fries got settled in
he got back by Olsen and put some distance on him. Casella had a solid
second place position but Baker was trying to run him down. Bakers
started to have some handling problems and wasn't able to catch Casella.
Holifield battled with traffic trying to catch back up to the pack but
couldn't quite get close enough. The finishing order would be Olsen,
Casella, Baker, Holifield and a late entry mystery driver in the 5th
place position.

Sunday, July 19th would bring great weather and another layout of the
Pocono facility. Single infield long course would be today's layout. Its
shorter than the double infield, but much faster as you use the
speedway front straight, t1, back straight and tunnel turn before you
jump on the binders and head into the infield via 'devils elbow.'
Practice went smoothly for everyone and qualifying showed big
improvements in times. Everyone was shooting for the 1:39 H2 track
record, but the name of that game is drafting. 1:41 would be the h2 pole
sitter Erik Olsen's time. Casella was in the 2 spot followed by john
baker & Holifield. Mike Fries would be our only H1 car for the day.
The race started and everyone was clean into T1. but coming into the
tunnel turn there was some contact between a 944, Baker's crx and a GTS
bmw. The bmw would get the worst of it with a banged up rear bumper and a
nose into the outside wall. Baker was able to continue with a banged up
crx and the 944 later came in. The specifics and final ruling on the
incident are still in the works. The rest of the race was incident free,
but with Casella having clutch problems, Bakers alignment now off and
his vtec not working Olsen was able to check out and take the win one
more time. Casella finished 2nd, Baker finished 3rd and Holifield was
closing in fast on Baker in 4th but couldn't quite get close enough.
Another mystery driver finished in the 5th spot but only completed ½
the laps before coming in with handling issues in his Integra type-r.
All in all a fun weekend for everyone.

Bakersfield, Ca June 22nd and 23rd, to conquer the gruling 1ccw layout.
In temperatures hovering around 100 degrees, the Honda Challenge racing
was still very entertaining as always. Saturday's H2 action featured
Manny Coats in his CRX stealing a win from points leader Greg Neuwirth's
Integra, and Tom Paulie in the AEM RSX rounding out the podium spots.
Sunday the temps were hotter and so was the racing. Coats and Neuwirth
ran away from the 3rd and 4th place H2 cars nearly 1/2 a lap just a few
laps in, but some contact with an out of class car sent Coats' crx off
track and relegated him to second place. He was able to get back on
track and not loose much time which allowed him to close back down the
gap to Neuwirth and again fight for first place. On the very last lap,
Neuwirth made a small error allowing Coats to slip by to take the
factory with Neuwirth right on his tail in second place. A meeting with
the race director following the event would place blame for the contact
on Coats, and automatically disqualify him from the days competition. So
in the end, Neuwirth would take the win with past H1 National Champ
Bernardo Martinez a 2nd and Tom Landry's '90 Civic in the final podium
spot. Next stop before the Nationals at Miller Motorsports Park is Auto
Club Speedway in Fontana,Ca which always lends itself to large fields
and tight racing, we'll see you then!
would be survival over weight. With the new 40 minute race program, alot
of drivers were scrambling to find the optimal ammount of fuel and
balast to make minimum weight at post-race weigh in.
Spencer Anderson
debued his new EG hatch in H2 trim this weekend and Jim Hovey would
come back with a new engine in his EK coupe after having one let go at
last months race. Erik Olsen returned to defend his wins last month from
John Baker and Brian Casella. Stephanie Holifield retuened with a new
b18b in her civic as well.
Mike Fries was also in attendance in his
H1 S2000 hoping to fine tune his set up even more.
Practice went
well. 60+ cars on track was pritty interesting, but everyone made it
through without major insidents. Spencer had an axle pop put and a wheel
loosen up, so he came in early to work on it. Brian and Stef had some
tune issues with their cars but everyone else made it through practice
with out issue. Spencer tightned his wheel, put his axle back in the
transmission and got ready for qualifying.
Qualifying went smoothly
for most of the honda challenge drivers. Spencer had another axle pop
out and didnt complete a full lap. So he would start out back for the
race. Erik would be on pole, John would be 2nd, Jim had some problems
and was in 3rd but way back in the pack. Brian had more issues with his
type-r and didnt make it out for the race nor did stef.
The race
started and the 1-2 battle up front between erik and john went on for a
few laps before erik would stretch his lead out and hold it till the
checkard flag. John finished 2nd. Jim blew the new engine but would be
the 3rd place finisher since he did make it past 1/2 way. Spencer's axle
stayed in and he was chasing jim for the first few lapsuntil his front
lower control arm bushings fave up. He kept it foing, although way off
pace untill half way and then pulled in. Mike Fries was flying around in
H1 until he came past a slower GTS3 car that was hafing some
overheating problems. They got together and there was some tire to tire
contact sending Mike way up on 2 wheels. He was able to bring it back
down on all 4 but wasn't able to continue the race.
Post race weigh
in would find both erik and john under weight which would DQ them.
putting Jim in 1st and Spencer in 2nd.

Sunday morning brought a
new day and another race. Sunday also brought lots of drivers scrambling
for more ballast. Spencer's car was down for the day with bad bushings,
so his 160lbs of ballast was spread between 3 differant cars in 3
differant classes. John had an issue with his rear lca and would borrow a
set out of Spencer's car. Brian went on the dyno to try to figure out
what was wrong with his integre type-r. a quick blast with the wide band
would tell the story. With air fuels i very unsave areas, he made the
decision to not run it and risk damaging the engine. Stef got her car
running and would get to click off some laps off durring the day.
Practice
was combined with qualifying for sunday's schedual, so all the remaning
drivers went out. Fries got a few laps in but was having some handling
problems following the previous race contact. So he decided not to run
the race and preserve the car for the next event. Stef had an ignition
issue durring qualifying and wouldn't make it out for the race. So for
sunday's race it came down to Erik Olsen and John Baker. Erik put it on
pole, but baker would get out in front within the first 2 laps.
Unfortunately, a bad axle and a ton of vibration would take him out and
Erik would say in it for the win.

it is known for heat and sometimes known for snow in the winter and this race was a taste of the latter. Extreme winds, showers and very cool temps were in the area reminding us more of January than May, but the track remained dry for all the So Cal Race Groups during the weekend.
Saturday's race was fantastic in the H2 category with many chasing Renan Bayer. Ryan Flaherty, Ken Adelberg, Greg Neuwirth and Benoit Pecqueur were all swapping the honor of second place each lap. It was a terrific battle to behold, but alas, there were a number of retirements and even a surprise post race tech inspection which found one car out of compliance. In the end, Bayer retained 1st with series newcomer Mark Maksimow claiming 2nd and Ryan Flaherty finishing 3rd a few laps down. Sunday's race featured a slightly thinner field, but still close racing with an exciting reversed grid decided by a coin flip after qualifying. In H2 a hard fought battle left Edik Stepanyan showing his experience nabbing a victory, with Renan Bayer nursing a hurt gearbox into 2nd and Manny Coats rounding out the podium for the weekend. It was another great weekend in the books for the SoCal HC field. The warm summer stretch is here with Buttonwillow and AAA Speedway the next two stops on the So Cal NASA calender before the Nationals at Miller Motorsports park in Utah.
See you next month at Buttonwillow!
