Entering the peak of the Summer stretch for the NASA season, the So Cal regional racers stopped at Buttonwillow Raceway park west of...
Bakersfield, Ca June 22nd and 23rd, to conquer the gruling 1ccw layout.
In temperatures hovering around 100 degrees, the Honda Challenge racing
was still very entertaining as always. Saturday's H2 action featured
Manny Coats in his CRX stealing a win from points leader Greg Neuwirth's
Integra, and Tom Paulie in the AEM RSX rounding out the podium spots.
Sunday the temps were hotter and so was the racing. Coats and Neuwirth
ran away from the 3rd and 4th place H2 cars nearly 1/2 a lap just a few
laps in, but some contact with an out of class car sent Coats' crx off
track and relegated him to second place. He was able to get back on
track and not loose much time which allowed him to close back down the
gap to Neuwirth and again fight for first place. On the very last lap,
Neuwirth made a small error allowing Coats to slip by to take the
factory with Neuwirth right on his tail in second place. A meeting with
the race director following the event would place blame for the contact
on Coats, and automatically disqualify him from the days competition. So
in the end, Neuwirth would take the win with past H1 National Champ
Bernardo Martinez a 2nd and Tom Landry's '90 Civic in the final podium
spot. Next stop before the Nationals at Miller Motorsports Park is Auto
Club Speedway in Fontana,Ca which always lends itself to large fields
and tight racing, we'll see you then!
